Writing Sample on Art Deco Vision Board

Art Deco originated during the 1920s in France and is a style that demonstrates visual arts using product design and architecture. Bold geometric forms of cubism influenced art Deco, sought out from the Vienna Secession, implements bright colors from Fauvism, and craftsmanship from the eras of Louis Philippe I and Louis XVI. These eras led to art deco becoming an international decorative arts and architecture movement. It mainly focuses on exotic styles often pulled from countries like China, Japan, India, Persia, ancient Egypt, and Maya art. Now Art Deco is known to strive to represent modernism after emerging from Art Nouveau during the same time. This style has changed throughout the years but always kept the same geometric techniques. It uses repetition through colors and still shapes to create unique patterns. In the early 20th century, technological changes and advances led to chrome plating and sleek finishes that implement the luxurious atmosphere most associated with Art Deco.

Though Art Deco originated in France, it reached its height in popularity through the 1920s, 30s, and 40s. Art Deco is a luxurious style incorporating elegant designs, geometric shapes, and bold, moody colors. Art Deco uses statement pieces like mirrors, chrome, and glass throughout a space to accentuate interior spaces and bring in unique historical artifacts. Art Deco has even branched out to be displayed through wallpapers to show integral parts of the mix ‘n’ match interiors, often including chevrons, fans, and sunbursts.

This particular trend shows dramatic, luxurious, and alluring pieces that can simultaneously live between the past and present. People implementing this style prefer a more captivating style that conveys a nostalgic atmosphere. Trend followers who pick up this style because of its popularity will use muted variations of colors, vertical interest/intricate lines, and unique, eye-catching patterns to show a streamlined look.

We decided to incorporate Art Deco into a lounge bar setting at a high-end hotel. This atmosphere will accurately represent what Art Deco stands for. It is low-lit with artistic qualities, abstract art, and unique furniture pieces. Each piece we have chosen to incorporate has the above aspects that make it fit into the Art Deco category. We have dark walls with light pink or yellow furniture to contrast and have gold tables, shelves, art, and bar stools. These colors are known in Art Deco and work well in a traditional yet modern way.

Art Deco often has sleek, geometric designs with dark, rich colors and styles. We put our mood board together to see how the design is all incorporated using techniques through the furniture, wall art, colors, and overall design. The color seen most on our mood board is the deep emerald green, often accented with gold. These colors fit the moody but classy vibe that Art Deco often gives. We wanted our lounge to be modern while incorporating the classic vibe from the 20s-the 40s. We tried to keep the geometric techniques with the artwork, furniture, the bar itself, and the glasses used by the bar. These pieces all together accurately represent Art Deco.
